Ashstripe smiled inside, he was gaining ground with Roland but outside he kept his expression as a simple amused smirk and his paws folded casually, to further reinforce his aura of confidence, "But?"

Ashstripe shrugged, "Ye probably answered ye own question there, tis not really 'out of my way'. " He returned to grinning again, he wasn't sure, but he was sure that he wasn't going to let the younger one know that.

"Heh." he took a small gulp from the flask, relishing the sweet burn down his throat. "I think t'was. But this is a non-issue." he sat down slowly, staring over at him.

Ashstripe winced quite sharply as soon as the question had reached his ears, in a similar fashion to one who had just been prodded with something sharp unexpectedly. He sighed slightly, re-opening an old wound was never a talent of his, nor was being open, "Aye...I did." He muttered eventually, he wasn't completely sure of his entire family, but he hadn't heard anything from anyone for many a season, so they may as well have been dead to him.

Ashstripe smiled weakly, "It's alright lad." He then shifted his gaze uneasily to the forge fire, that always had managed to settle his uneasy thoughts and calm him down. Call him crazy but Ashstripe swore he could see things in that fire, past memories and beasts he could hardly recognize; but it didn't matter to him, the forge would always subdue his negative emotions.

The badger knight was no fool; he could see the danger that lingered in fire, he could see the life that had been ripped from him in it; that was why he claimed fire as his own. He smiled at the big badger lord for a moment, and then walked over to the forge, reaching deep into his pocket for a moment. He drew out a small glass phial, and clenched his paws around the tip, then popped the lid open. Clenching his paw tight, he swept his paws through the fire, and smiled at Ashstripe.
"Hey...Ya know..It's funny, but losing things sometimes makes you able to find new things, ya know? My brother told me a story when he taught me this trick. There was a bird once, called a phoenix. It would burn itself up when it died, and from the ashes, it would spring out again. The point is, even though sometimes we get burned, just rise out of the ash, ya know?" He opened his paws, and a flame leapt from them, flickering out of exisistance as soon as it was released.
"Sorry, that was a trick I haven't gotten to do in a long while." he chuckled. "Not since my brother taught me, in fact." He tilted his head a little, and then decided to tell him. "...Hey. Can I ask you something?"

Ashstripe had sat silently, intently listening, but at the same time his thoughts wandered with the fire, dreaming of what had been said. It was only with the flicker of the fire from Roland was he able to tune back into reality and catch his last question. He rubbed his eyes quickly, as if just awaking from a dream and shook his head briskly, it wasn't a pleasant dream.
